The Township of Ocean

Ocean Township (officially the Township of Ocean) is an 11.1 square mile suburban community in eastern Monmouth County. It is surrounded by the communities of West Long Branch (to the north), Interlaken, Neptune, and Allenhurst (to the south), Deal (to the east), and Tinton Falls (to the west).

Its nearly 30,000 residents live in neighborhoods still bearing strong sectional identities. Locals are as likely to say they live in “Oakhurst,” “Wanamassa,” or “Wayside,” for instance, as they are to say “Ocean Township.” This dispersion is reflected in the Township’s five different ZIP codes.

Town Hall

Ocean has no single, distinguishable township center. Town Hall sits on the corner of Deal and Monmouth Roads in Oakhurst. The Library and Historical Museum, sitting at the west end of the 240-acre Joe Palaia Park in West Deal, form the culture heart of town. Several sections, including Oakhurst and Wanamassa, have retail centers that give each a sense of village.

Yet, Ocean operates as a single government entity under a five-member Township Council, administered by a professional Township Manager. It has a single school district, overseeing, in 2012, five schools, more than 3,300 students and a $67.3 million operating budget.

This section of the website explains how the Township government and its resources work. It offers links to the sites residents and those interested in the community will find valuable.

The municipal administration maintains a website providing information about the town, its services, its processes, and its news.
